The Archbishop's Appeal has a proud record of helping vulnerable and marginalised people in our own community.
In the past fourteen years, it has been the capital appeal for Anglicare SA, raising funds for Anglicare's north and south family centres, and most recently, for two homes for frail and vulnerable elderly people.
Ian George Court in Brompton was the first, and it was so successful that a new home was built at Elizabeth for 60 people. Neal Court was opened in April 2008, thanks to the State and Federal Governments and $1.3 million from the Archbishop's Appeal.
The new project for the Archbishop's Appeal is called Generate. It is the first time the Appeal has sought to raise funds for a project, rather than a capital development.
Generate will work with young people who are not employed. But it will do more than that.
Generate at the Job Shop There are many excellent youth trainee programs, but they do not take account to the environment of the young person, and the people who influence them most.
Generate will work with their families as well, to combat generations of entrenched unemployment.
Generate acknowledges that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution to unemployment. Work may not be full time, and it may begin with volunteer work.
Anglicare staff do not believe it will be easy, but they also acknowledge that welfare is not the way out of poverty.
The Generate project will cost $500,000 for a year. In this time, we will work with 50 families.
