What is problem gambling?

Problem gambling occurs when a person cannot resist the urge to gamble.  During periods of stress, a person can become increasingly  preoccupied with the desire to gamble.  Ultimately, problem gambling interferes with the individual’s personal, family and work life. 

Problem gambling may lead to

  • Shortage of money
  • Family breakdown
  • Loss of work due to increased absence
  • Borrowing money
  • Emotional, psychological and physical stress

When is gambling a problem?

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then gambling may be a problem for you.

  • Do you feel anxious or depressed after you have gambled?
  • Do you find gambling is often on your mind?
  • Have you ever gambled to escape from problems which are causing you stress?
  • Is gambling affecting your role as a parent of employee?
  • Have you ever lied to your partner, family or friends about your gambling behaviour?
  • Do you only stop gambling when you have run out of money?
  • Have you ever gambled in an attempt to pay back debts?

If you have answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, Anglicare’s Gambling Help Service can provide information, assistance and support.
